3 Things to Do in Albuquerque, New Mexico

This was our first time visiting New Mexico and I'm sure that I'll add more things as we visit more in the future. For now, here are the three things that we enjoyed doing in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

1.   Petroglyph National Monument

There are three trail heads that you can start from, but we began at the Piedras Marcadas Canyon Trail because it was the easiest trail to take out senior dog on. On this trail, you will walk down a 1.5 to 2 mile round trip trail that is considered to be an easy hike. It is along a sandy path that is surrounded by boulders and a desert-type landscape with level ground. It is in the middle of a neighborhood, so you might hear dogs barking from backyards while on the trails, but it was it was mostly peaceful.

2.   Sandia Peak Tramway

Another thing that we did when we visited New Mexico was visit the Sandia Peak Tramway. This is a unique experience. The tramway runs up into the Sandia Mountains. There is a restaurant when you reach the top called Ten 3 which in nothing to write home about. The view at the top is AMAZING though! On the ride up, you'll have a guide that teaches you all about the mountains and surrounding area. It is quite interesting! There is a good hiking trail (moderate to hard depending on the person) that my husband and I thought was pretty challenging due to the increase in elevation and the rocky trail. You'll hike to an old hunting cabin called Kiwanis Cabin Trail. There are other trails that you can access when you reach the top, but we decided to take this trail because of the spectacular view when you reach the top--we were told. It is 2 miles round trip. You won't be sorry you made the trek even though it might be a bit challenging along the way.

3.   Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

This was the main event on our trip this year! We had been looking forward to this for months and the day finally arrived. It is a two week event, but we only stayed for the first weekend. I highly recommend attending both the morning evening sessions if you get the chance. They both provide for a very unique experience. When you go, take camping chairs, wear layers for the morning session, and take a blanket as well. We did the park-and-ride which saved us time a few dollars on the entry tickets. They will check your bags before getting on the buses so be prepared for that.
